Spotland is a narrative driven game about bunnies living in a ditch, ok it's a lot more involved than that! The project is the result of countless doodles of rabbits, many of which went from being just silly drawings I did in my spare time to becoming full-on characters I wanted to write about!
Long story short, as a literature student and now graduate these characters quickly became an obsession to the point I would spend countless hours thinking up silly antics they would get into. Originally my plan was to write a book about them but eventually I decided to make it into a game. The ability for games to allow you to directly participate in the story was very appealing to me as I believe it would even further facilitate the audience to immerse themselves in the story being told!
My goal is to create a story and cast that will be both entertaining and memorable, even if just a little! This is a real passion project for me so I hope to eventually present Spotland as a finished game in the future!
Development on Spotland started on mid October 2021. Currently the demo is set to release December 2022. Below you can see a list of updates:
Update 1
The Spotland demo is set to release December 2022 hopefully. Lots of changes will be implemented to the game as it is fast approaching a state that is more in line with what I had envisioned for the project originally. A couple of things I had to consider was the design of the sprites, the spots have gone through so many iterations throughout the developmen. When the game was still in GameMaker they all had a minimalistic design that I found particularly appealing, this is something that will be coming back in the RPG Maker build of the game with the sprite rework!
This change will allow the Spots to be a lot more expressive and facilitate the creation of new characters! Hopefully this will streamline the process, all while making the game more appealing!
Update 2 [NEWEST]
Before we continue, here are a list of some of the many changes this time around:
- Spots now have a walk cycle. They used to slide because the previous walk cycles were unrecyclable for the new sprites.
- Water visuals have been changed. Previously the effects on shore were created using events but this was only meant to be temporary.
- New character portraits made by Snows Undercover!
- Begun reworking shadows cast by the Spots and objects in the world.
- Reworked the interior of Star's house.
- Added experimental military vehicles...
I would like to announce that the game will be split amongst 4 acts. The December 2022 "demo" will consist the totality of the first act so you can get a healthy dose of Spotland before the full release!
